the hype house is kinda embarrassing for Netflix……

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

In April 2021, Netflix announced that they would be releasing a reality tv show, following the lives of tiktok’s biggest stars, The Hype House members, and a lot of people on social media (more specifically Twitter) were not here for it.

People were upset that Netflix was giving these “talentless” people fame and attention, and they were confused on why The Hype House was even getting their own show to begin with.

Fast forward to January 7, 2022, the show finally drops on Netflix, and what do you know? It shot up to the top 10 trending list, and so there I was scrolling through Netflix looking for something new to watch, and I see the show on my screen.

(Now look, I am not a Hype House stan, and I don’t keep up with these tiktokers, because realistically, I think they’re boring. I knew of The Hype House, but if you asked me to name all the members off the top of my head, my mind would go blank.)

But there I was, seeing the show on the trending list, and I decided to give it a watch. Why? Because I had nothing better to do, and I’m not gonna lie, I was interested to see what all the hype was about.

GETTING THROUGH THE FIRST EPISODE WAS A STRUGGLE!!!

And when I say this, I mean it 100%. It took me DAYS to get through the first episode (and mind you it’s only 31 minute), because it was so ridiculously boring. I had to pull myself through all 8 episodes of the season just to be able to give my full thoughts and opinions on the show, and now finally, here we are.

CAST

Before I even dive in on my thoughts on the show, let’s get a quick run down of the cast.

Boring Characters

Remember when I said that if you asked me to name all the members of The Hype House off the top of my head, my mind would go blank? Yeah, that’s still true even after watching the entire season. There were just so many cast members that I felt were a waste of screen time.

I understand that the show is supposed to be about all the members of the house, so if that’s the case, then why not show that?

The whole show was centered around the same people, and I know that there were other members because they were shown, but never actually talked. And the ones that did talk, most of them were boring and unlikable.

I would say that Kouvr was the only person who I could actually tolerate.

Boring Storylines

If you asked me to list all the interesting things that happened in this entire show, the page would be blank because nothing happened. We got the same dragged on storyline, which was:

  • Thomas being upset that Chase (and everyone else) aren’t being as involved as he would like in the company

  • Chase replying every. single. time. “iT’s bEcaUsE i’M reAlLy BuSy wiTH mUsiC”

That’s it!

For the entire season, all we got was this back and forth situation, which I should add, doesn’t even make sense at all because it just makes Thomas look like a hypocrite.

Hypocrisy: Charli D’Amelio, Dixie D’Amelio, and Adison Rae (all pictured below) are TikTok’s top 5 biggest stars, and all of them were once members of The Hype House, and when they left to expand their careers, I didn’t hear Thomas complain.

In fact, in the show, he was very happy that these three got big in their careers because it made The Hype House look like a legitimate business.

So… how come he’s now upset that Chase Hudson wants to do the exact same thing?

The whole thing just looked like they’re trying so hard to create drama and a good storyline because if you ask me, it really wasn't that deep.

There really wasn’t any need for this over-exaggerated back and forth nonsense. Like, just get on a Zoom call and talk this out.

Fake Storyline

Speaking of over-exaggeration and desperate need of drama, I can’t talk about this show without talking about the fact that Larry Merritt came out during a Twitch livestream, and said that the show created a fake storyline, because they needed to make it interesting.

“I do not claim any energy from the ‘Hype House’ show,” he said. “I did not go to any parties with COVID-19.”

He’s referring to a storyline in the show where it was stated that he went to a party even though he tested positive for Covid, which apparently, (according to him) never happened and was all a LIE.

And then we had Professor Nikita Dragun tryna educate us on Covid safety measures when this was her throughout the pandemic:

Black fishing

What really irked me the most when watching this show (and even after watching it) was this scene right here:

We have Larray confronting (more like downplaying) Nikita on her controversies surrounding black fishing and why it’s offensive to some people and all that, and this is Nikita’s response:

(Me too Larray… me too…)

To make it even funnier, this is the “natural” skin tone in question:

This tweet right here really sums up the whole show perfectly:

The Hype House did not need a reality show, and they definitely didn’t need one on Netflix. It would have made more sense for them to do a mini docu series on Youtube with MTV or something like that, but Netflix? No!

The whole season could have been summarized down to 5 minutes on a Snapchat show.

Keep the second season Netflix, ’cause I don’t want it.
